CILICIA, Selinus-Traianopolis. Septimius Severus. AD 193-211. Æ (31mm, 16.46 g, 6h). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Zeus seated left on low basis, holding thunderbolt and scepter, within tetrastyle temple façade; ΘЄ/OV TPA in pediment . Levante, Selinus 45 = BMC 1 = Price & Trell 647; SNG France –; cf. SNG Levante 460 (Marcus Aurelius). VF, green patina.

Returning to Rome after his eastern campaigns, Trajan died at Selinus in early August AD 117. The city gained considerable fame as a result, erecting a temple to the deified emperor and even changing its name to “Traianopolis”.
